Europe Kicks Off Some Of The World’s Most Sweeping Vaccine Mandates And Fines

Greece has become the latest country in Europe to impose fines on older people who aren't up to date with their vaccine.

The government of Greece is trying to cut down on the number of deaths and hospitalizations in the vulnerable group by fining people ages 60 and over who have not been vaccinations against Covid-19.
In January, Italy made vaccinations compulsory for older people, expanding existing restrictions that bar most unvaccinated people from public transport and venues.
From February, Austria will make vaccine compulsory for everyone over the age of 18.

The law will not be enforced until the middle of March, but vaccine holdouts will face fines of up to $4, 100.

The vaccine pass law that the president said is designed to "piss off" the nation's vaccine holdouts will exclude unvaccinated people ages 16 and over from most public venues this week.

Europe stares down one of its worst outbreak since the Pandemic began as a result of strict policies targeting the unvaccinated. Europe was already fighting a wave of Covid-19 driven by the delta variant before it spread to the omicron variant. A string of countries have announced record high infections. Spain and the U.K. are trying to live with Covid despite soaring case numbers because omicron has a lower death and hospitalization rate.
Germany has a vaccine mandate. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pushed for mandatory vaccinations before he was elected chancellor in November. It has yet to happen, and has been pushed back to March, and still faces tough opposition and debate in parliament. The debate could take months.
