Meituan backs A.I. chip start-up as Chinese tech giants pour money into semiconductors



The 14th Five Year Plan of China has seven frontier technologies. Semiconductor and brain- computer fusion are areas that China will focus research on.

Food delivery giant Meituan is the latest big technology company to invest in a chip company.

Axera has a focus on artificial intelligence for the field of computer vision. This relates to the way that computers can analyze and process large amounts of images and could be used in areas such as facial recognition. This requires a lot of computing power and can be aided by computer vision chips.

The start-up launched two chips. Axera's chips can be used in applications such as smart cities and smart homes. Axera said that the new funding would be put toward hiring talent and expanding the business.
