Full Wolf Moon, the first full moon of 2022, rises tonight

The first full moon of the year is tonight and you can see it in the sky.
The January full moon is also known as the full Wolf Moon. The time is 1148 GMT. Skywatchers can see the moon rise about 24 minutes before sunset. The full moon will rise in New York City at 4:31 pm.
Full moons occur when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth. The sun's light reflected from the moon makes it look illuminated. The bright star Pollux can be seen near the full moon, which is the best place to view the constellation of Gemini.

The wolf moon is when wolves can be heard howling at the moon. It was thought that wolves were more hungry during the winter. Wolf howling can be a sign of territory, trying to locate other pack members, or coordinating hunting, according to The Farmers' Almanac.

The January full moon is also known as the Wolf Moon. The Assiniboine people of the Northern Great Plains refer to this month's full moon as the Center Moon because it rises during the middle of the cold season in the Northern Hemisphere.
According to The Farmers' Almanac, there are other full moon names such as the Cold Moon, the Freeze Up Moon, the Severe Moon, the Hard Moon, the Canada Goose Moon, the Great Moon, and the Greetings Moon. January's Wolf Moon is referred to as the Ice Moon, the Moon after Yule and the Old Moon by NASA.
