The man who took four people hostage at a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, bought his gun on the street, according to President Joe Biden.
The FBI identified the suspect in the situation as a British national.
Biden said that Akram had only been in the US for a few weeks and had spent his first night in a homeless shelter.
Biden said he doesn't have all the details yet, but he thinks that it might have been purchased from a homeless person.
It's difficult to tell. "I don't know," Biden said.
The president said there were no bombs that they knew of.
Biden said that background checks don't work when someone buys a gun off the street.
"But you can't stop someone from buying a gun from someone else on the street if they're on the street," Biden said. It's because of the failure of us to focus as hard as we should and as consistent as we should on gun purchases, gun sales, ghost guns, and a whole range of things that I'm trying to do.
The situation lasted for 11 hours. Authorities said that the synagogue was live- streaming a morning service when Akram entered and took the hostages.
All four were released unharmed. His death has not been released.
Biden did not know why the synagogue was targeted. Matt DeSarno, the FBI's Special Agent in Charge, said that the issue was not related to the Jewish community.
I don't. I don't think there is enough information to know why he targeted that synagogue or why he insisted on the release of someone who's been in prison for over 10 years. "We don't have enough facts," Biden said.
During the hostage situation at the Carswell Air Force Base in Texas, Akram made demands that "Lady Al-Qaeda" Aafia Siddiqui be released.
A jury found Siddiqui guilty of attempting to kill a US soldier.
