The approach to the intro sequence has changed over the last decade. They have become more elaborate and grandiose, an event unto themselves, rather than being 5-15 seconds long or a simple title card. If they do their job right, they will get you in the mood and make you want to listen to the song. They are a distraction and something you can have on in the background while you use the bathroom or get food.
Game of thrones and Mad Men have intros that will always be remembered for their direction, as well as their striking art style. Westworld may have some of the best opening credits to date. Succession and Law & Order: SVU are examples of how an intro can be great if its music is more important than its visuals. Nicholas Britell's piano work and Mike Post's killer clarinet are what make the shows' respective intros.
Animated shows are usually better because they are allowed to get a little more loose with what they can. You will remember them for their cyberpunk-lite jams, which can be colorful and absurd. If you watch western animation, you are used to opening scenes with incredible visuals and a song that you can't wait to hear the full version of.
We want to know what your favorite intros are, so please tell us in the comments.
