It is a car.
The company is still new to electric vehicles, but it's not stopping it from announcing more ambitious projects. The first all-electric race car was introduced by the automaker at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The STI E-RA Concept hints at the upcoming track vehicle from Subaru, which will have 1,073 HP of total power from its four Yamaha motors, extensive downforce and all-wheel drive, as well as a "unique" Torque Vectoring system that maximizes grip and stability.
The 60kWh battery is relatively small, but that doesn't mean the E-RA won't thrive on the track. It's hoping to set a Nrburgring lap time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. It's not as fast as VW's ID.R, but it's ahead of road cars like the Model S Plaid. The E-RA will be tested at Japanese racing circuits later in the year.
The brand unveiled a Solterra STI Concept that is a sporty version of the upcoming crossover. The upgraded Solterra has a roofSPOILER, skirtSPOILER, and other customizations to signal its performance ambitions.
The E-RA is a declaration of intent for the plans of the company. It shows the company is serious about EV and can produce high- performance cars in addition to everyday people haulers. The challenge is to translate the lessons learned from concepts like this into regular vehicles. If it wants to counter the efforts of its rivals, it may need to move quickly.
