Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Have New Art Styles

The art styles of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were among the highlights. The other Spiders had their own distinct visual styles, while the other Spiders were in traditional 3D. Spider-Man Noir was done in black-and-white, and Peni Parker was done in a style that was similar to an Japanese animation. It was no surprise to hear that the sequel will broaden its visual horizon with Miles and Gwen traveling through the multiverse.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller talked about how each universe will be an artistic treat in their own rights. Miller said that the idea that we would be going to different dimensions allowed for each world to have its own art style. You can see a little of this in the trailer itself as the visual looks change when they are flung from a colorful 2D world to a vibrant 3D sci-fi setting.

The first Spider-Verse film was ambitious just by having six Spiders of different art styles, and the sequel is trying to go bigger than that. Lord talked about how they want to push animation in directions it hasn't gone yet, just like they said they wouldn't just rest on their laurels. The pair teased back in November that each universe would feel different from the others, and that it would make the first movie look quaint.

The other Spider to be confirmed is the Spider-Man of 2099. It will be interesting to see what other Spiders show up for the sequel, and what art styles they bring along with them. The Japanese Spider-Man should make an appearance at some point.

The first part of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on October 7.
