There were 2,185 flights that were facing delays as of 3:10 pm.

The snowy conditions in Charlotte, North Carolina, where American Airlines has its headquarters, resulted in the cancellation of 633 flights.

PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American, canceled more than 500 flights.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport was the most affected airport in the US.

The main hub for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, had to cancel more than 200 flights on Sunday due to bad weather.

The winter storm has had a significant impact on American's operations, and many of the flights were canceled so that the company could avoid last-minute disruptions, and customers affected by the storm could rebook their flights without change fees, according to a statement to Forbes.

More than 85% of customers who were impacted by weather cancellation have been given a new scheduled flight time within eight hours of their original flight, according to a statement from Delta.

American, Delta and United had to lay off about 400,000 employees due to the Pandemic. The airlines saw huge stock declines at the start of the Pandemic, which has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Despite the spread of the omicron variant, aviation experts expect the holiday season to be more busy for air travel than any other time. Thousands of flights were canceled in the US in the days leading up to and after the holidays due to airlines struggling to staff flights. United Airlines had to cancel flights earlier this week after about 3,000 workers tested positive for Covid-19, and this weekend's snow and ice hampered operations throughout the South.

The number is big.

74 million. According to the National Weather Service, there are more than one person under a winter weather alert.

Surprising fact.

The governors of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia have declared states of emergencies due to the winter storm. Duke Energy says that thousands of people are without power in North and South Carolina.

What to watch for.

The winter storm will stretch from the Ohio Valley to New England, according to the NWS. Washington, D.C. is expected to get two to three inches of snow on Sunday. While New York City is expected to get less than an inch of snow Sunday night and into Monday morning, parts of New York and New Jersey could get up to five inches.

These States could be the hardest hit by a major winter storm.
