Walmart doesn't want to be left out of the rush. CNBC has learned that Walmart filed several trademark applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office in December for selling virtual goods, and that it would provide a currency as well. Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney, told CNBC that Walmart was thinking about how it would tackle digital currencies and products, and that the documents don't necessarily guarantee action.
Walmart has filed trademarks as part of the process of exploring how new technologies might influence shopping, according to a statement from the company. Don't expect the company to deny or confirm plans at this point.
It wouldn't be weird for Walmart to invest in cryptocurrencies. There has been a rush among major brands to enter the space with currencies, NFTs or both after Facebook changed its name to Meta. Well-known names such as Adidas, Nike, Gap and others have started selling NFTs, which are virtual spaces. If this trend continues, Walmart might not want to be left out, even if it's not in a hurry to join early adopters.
