Josh Sweat, the Eagles' starting defensive end, will not play in Sunday's playoff game against the Buccaneers after undergoing a medical procedure to address a life-threatening situation.
Josh Sweat was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. He underwent an emergency procedure. The doctors addressed a life-threatening situation, according to the Eagles. Josh and the medical team did everything they could to help him return to play. He improved every day but the doctors decided he wasn't ready. Josh came so close to playing that it is a credit to his strength and determination.
Sweat was listed on the injury report with an illness. On Friday, coach Nick Sirianni said that Sweat had been dealing with abdominal pain but had since returned to the facility and was feeling better.
Sweat had the best regular season of his career in 2021, tying for a team high in sacks with 7.5. He had seven tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits.
Ryan Kerrigan and Tarron Jackson will see increased roles in Sweat's absence, playing alongside starter Derek Barnett.
The Eagles had trouble applying consistent pressure on Tom Brady in Week 6.
