Will ScotWind auction deliver a renewables revolution?

The largest offshore wind farm in Scotland is located in the Moray Firth.

The first plots of seabed in Scottish waters in a decade are up for grabs at the ScotWind auction. When the successful bidders are announced on Monday, could it be the start of a long-awaited renewables revolution?

Over the next decade, these new offshore wind farm sites could double the amount of renewable energy capacity in Scottish waters.

The capacity of offshore wind in Scotland is about 2GW, a small fraction of the total capacity.

Scotland's single largest source of renewable energy is the Moray East project, which has a capacity of over a thousandmegawatts and can power over 650,000 homes.

Seagreen, located 27 km off the Angus coast, will be larger than it is in the next year.

Projects which have consent and are already in the process of being built come to less than 10GW.

At least a further 10GW should be added to the Scottish market as technology becomes more efficient, as the successful bidder for the ScotWind auction will be announced on Monday.

The potential to power seven million homes is one quarter of the total number in Britain.

The rights to develop several sites in Scottish waters for offshore wind are up for auction.

The process is managed by Crown Estate Scotland, which will receive hundreds of millions of pounds in profits.

74 bids have been submitted for the 15 Scotwind zones, which are on a bigger scale than before.

Initial offers will be made on Monday.

Developers can move forward with detailed plans after agreements are finalized.

The winning bidder will need to get planning permission, get grid connections, get billions of pounds lined up, and then install.

It is a long-term project.

There are many areas off the Scottish coast that could be used for offshore wind.

There are several new big areas in the outer Moray Firth, including one east of Shetland, three to the west of Orkney, and a north-west of Lewis.

As the technology gets more efficient, it is thought that about 1,200 huge wind turbine will be required across the 15 zones.

The world's first floating wind farm off Aberdeenshire will be featured in ScotWind.

It is possible to put a turbine into deeper water with the anchoring of these.

In England last year, the industry and government were astonished at how much firms were willing to bid to get the right to develop these sites.

The ScotWind auction was stopped last year because the cap on Scottish bids was too low.

The cap for the auction bids was raised.

If every bid is submitted up to the maximum cap, it could raise over a billion dollars.

Crown Estate Scotland will charge leasing fees once they start operating.

Many firms see the potential of offshore wind energy despite the high investment costs.

They are usually in a group with deep pockets and smaller companies with expertise in taking wind farms to the point where the billions are required.

Big oil companies want to balance their hydrocarbons with green energy. Total from France, ENI from Italy, Equinor from Norway and Shell all bid.
