The mini-tsunami damaged boats in Kochi prefecture.

A monitoring group says the threat of more waves around the Pacific has passed.

The threat of a large wave had dissipated, but coastal areas should remain alert for strong or unusual currents.

The US and Japan have warned people to move away from the coast.

There are mounting fears over how bad the damage is in Tonga.

At a news conference on Sunday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said boats and large boulders had washed up in the island nation's capital.

She said that conditions were calm and stable, but that communications with the tiny Pacific nation remained very limited.

If it is safe to do so, New Zealand will send an air force plane to assess the damage on Monday.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries in the country.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that Washington was "deeply concerned" about the damage and was ready to send support.

Waves of more than a meter crashed into the island after the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai volcano.

Water was washing through a church and several homes in the city.

People tried to flee low-lying areas by car in videos on social media.

The eruption hit as the family was preparing for dinner, and the younger brother thought bombs were going off nearby, according to one resident.

"My first instinct was to hide under the table, I grabbed my little sister, and screamed at my parents and others in the house to do the same," she was quoted as saying.

The water was rushing into their home.

"You could hear people screaming for safety, for everyone to get higher ground," she said.

The volcano's smoke and ash reached 20 km into the sky.

The eruption of the volcano was heard across the South Pacific and as far away as the US.

The 1.2m wave was recorded in the Kominato district of Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The initial eight-minute eruption was so violent that it could be heard as loud thunder sounds in the capital, Suva, more than 800 km away.
