The Los Angeles Rams have ruled out free safety Taylor Rapp for their wild-card playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday because he did not clear concussion protocol this week.

The Rams lost to the 49ers in overtime on Sunday. They lost strong safety Jordan Fuller to an ankle injury in that game, meaning they'll be without both starting safeties.

The backup running back is doubtful. Sean McVay expects Van Jefferson to play, even though he's questionable with a shoulder injury.

McVay said Rapp was doing everything in his power to get back as quickly as possible.

The Rams' top two tacklers this season were Fuller and Rapp. Rapp and Ramsey shared the team lead with four picks. The team signed Eric Weddle to their practice squad this week, bringing the safety out of retirement.

McVay said that Weddle will be added to the active roster for Monday night's game and will contribute in a to-be-determined role. The Rams have two safety players.

Weddle, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, retired after the Rams' season ended. 750 days have passed since his last game.

McVay said that he had done a great job. He has brought a lot of energy. He's a great speaker. He is a great leader. He will be ready to leave. We're still working on that role. I have a lot of confidence in Nick Scott and the others.

McVay said there's a lot of ranges to how much Weddle might play against Arizona, before affirming his confidence in Scott and Burgess.

"If he gets into the flow, he's going to want to leave," McVay said. If he's feeling good and there's no risk, we'll just take it easy. I think it's difficult for me to put a parameters around it because it's never been done before. It could be 10 or 30. It depends on what kind of personnel groupings we're presenting to the offense.

The Rams' defensive signal-caller was a captain, and he was named a captain. Troy Reeder is likely to take over those duties.

Matthew Stafford was listed as a full participant in all three practices this week, despite having a toe injury.
