Aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk departs Bremerton for Texas dismantling

The last oil-fired aircraft carrier in the US left Bremerton on Saturday for a 16,000-mile journey around South America to be scrapped.

Many former sailors aboard the "Battle Cat" watched as tugs pulled the rugged ship into Sinclair inlet on a foggy Saturday morning. The Kitty Hawk will not fit in the Panama Canal so it will be tugged through the Strait of Magellan to get to Texas.

The old sailors were gathered to see it go and one of them was a Navy veteran. The stories of being put in charge of millions in equipment and the care of thousands of lives were shared by many.

Urband served as a mate on the ship from 1992 to 1996 and said it was part of his history. I was halfway around the world from home and was graduating from high school.

The Kitty Hawk was an eye-opening experience for Rich. The sailors of the Kitty Hawk were twice the size of his hometown.

The ship left Bremerton on Saturday and was watched by a man who served from 1979-1983. I have come a long way since I was a kid on a farm.

The ship had escalators to help sailors move around more quickly. Sailors say it never seemed to work well. Too many people propel the escalator forward, spilling those at the bottom into a pileup.

The were nothing more than a pain.

The Kitty Hawk is the same as the other ships in the Bremerton fleet, which were dismantled at the same place. The company paid one cent for the warships.

Alan Baribeau, a spokesman for the Naval Sea Systems Command, said that the contract values reflect that the company will benefit from the subsequent sale of scrap steel, iron, and non-ferrous metal ores.

The Kitty Hawk got a rare visit to one of the Navy's only two carrier dry docks in 2021. After a previous carrier's scrubbing sparked environmental concerns, the ship's hull could not be cleaned in Sinclair Inlet.

During the nation's wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, the Kitty Hawk participated. From 1998 to 2008 the Kitty Hawk was the only permanently forward-deployed carrier in the fleet. It has been in the air since this year.

The Kitty Hawk will not be part of the five former aircraft carriers that have been turned into museums. The Navy declined to pursue that course despite the fact that many sailors and others advocated for its preservation. The advocates were worried that there would never be another carrier preserved for future use. The last Navy museum was the San Diego-based ship, the Midway.
