Hamas claims it discovered a dolphin assassin sent by Israel. Experts say it's plausible, but more likely propaganda.

A spokesman for the Palestinian Al-Qassam brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed in a video on Monday that the group had discovered an Israeli assassin dolphin off the coast of the Gaza Strip.

According to the Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds, the dolphin was trained to chase and kill Hamas's frogmen.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the spokesman said that one Hamas fighter was killed in the conflict and found a gun-like device attached to the aquatic mammal. He didn't say when the operation took place.

Hamas claims to have found a gun-like device on a dolphin.

The Al-Qassam brigades are a part of Hamas.

Insider was told that while dolphins can and have been used for military exercises, this most recent claim of a sea-faring assassin should be viewed with skepticism.

"If you like not entirely honest media in the past, Hamas has definitely put out a lot of propaganda," said HI Sutton, a defense analyst who writes for the US Naval Institute during an interview with Insider. There's a chance that it's not real.

There is a propaganda war going on.

The lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University told Insider he agrees.

He told Insider that he is very, very skeptical about the possibility. "There's a propaganda war going on and it's important to question Hamas's claim," saidPhillips.

This isn't the first time that Hamas has accused Israel of using dolphins to target them.

In 2015, it claimed to have captured a dolphin. It was turned into a "murderer" by Israeli security forces after it was equipped with a spy camera. The alleged marine secret agent's photographic evidence was never released.

Israel has been accused of using animals to target enemies. Hezbollah claimed to have captured Israeli spies. Sudan accused Israel of sending a vulture capable of espionage into the country.

In 2010, an Egyptian lawmaker made a claim that Mossad was responsible for several shark attacks that occurred off the coast of the Sharm el-Sheikh resort.

Some nations have used marine mammals in warfare, despite the fact that animal-related conspiracy theories about Israel might sound fanciful.

The US Navy has a marine mammal program.

The US and Russian militaries have trained sea creatures. The existence of the US Navy Marine Mammal Program is well-known, despite the fact that little is known about the Soviet-era or modern Russian program.

The NMMP trains bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions to perform protection, mine detection, and object recovery after the program became de-classified. The US Navy insists that it has never trained marine mammals to attack people or ships because dolphins can't distinguish between friendly vessels or divers.

It is impractical to use dolphins in murder missions because they have their own minds.

He told Insider that behavioral scientists talk of animals as platforms that are programmed. They are sentient creatures with a will of their own and there is always an element of unpredictable about them.

While the dolphins are unlikely to be doing the killing themselves, it is not that far-fetched to suggest that the militaries could be using them to attach markers to targets with a view to them being captured or taken out by humans.

The gun-like device shown in the video could be a marker buoy, or a pinger or acoustic device.

Israel has not made public its marine mammal military program. The Israel Defense Forces did not respond to Insider's request for comment on the existence of the program or the alleged discovery of a killer dolphin.

Israel's official account shared a joke on Wednesday. There were eight dolphin emojis in the tweet.
