China Southern A380 Pilot Named “Quarantine King”

The company has an employee of the year award. The A380 pilot from China Southern was given the King of Quarantine award for his work in 2021.

The captain of China Southern spent a lot of time in the hospital.

China Southern has named Ma Jian as the King of Quarantine in 2021. Over half of the year, he was an A380 captain and spent a total of 189 days inQuarantine. The airline described the actions of the captain.

China Southern Airlines pilots know that they maintain the stability of the international logistics supply chain and have become a symbol of China's national strength during the epidemic.

He only had 75 duty days over the course of the year, and flew a total of 500 hours. It takes an average of 10 hours to fly a week. I guess this captain beat out others because all international China Southern crews spent a lot of time inQuarantine.

China Southern has five planes in its A380 fleet, but only three are currently in use. The planes operate long haul services from Guangzhou to Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, as well as some domestic services to Beijing.

The A380 cockpit has a captain in it.

What is China's policy for pilots?

China has a zero-tolerance approach towards coronaviruses. When arriving in China from abroad, a minimum of 14 days is required, and this applies to airline staff.

I assume that China Southern uses back-to-back trips in order to minimize the amount of time they spend inQuarantine.

A crew might work a Los Angeles trip and then an Amsterdam trip, with just a two night stay in Guangzhou between the two flights. There is nothing preventing crews from working several back-to-back trips, as long as they stay in their hotel rooms, because the full 14-day quark only applies to have free moment around China.

If he only worked one trip at a time, he would have spent more time there. Since crews also have to suck up phlegm during their layovers, it can be hard to be a crew member in this position.

Some staff at Cathay Pacific have been fired after leaving their room during a layover, because of the same policy.

The bottom line.

A captain of the China Southern A380 was named the company's "King of Quarantine" for spending 189 days in a restricted area last year. In China, airline employees have to stay out of work for 14 days after returning from a trip, which is different to the sacrifice made by airline employees during the Pandemic.

It is likely that this captain will look at a similar amount of quarantining in 2022, given that there is no end in sight for China's zero-tolerance approach to coronaviruses.
