Virat Kohli: Batter steps down as India Test captain

The captain of the India men's Test team has stepped down.

The man who stopped leading India's limited-overs sides last year had been the Test side's leader since 2015.

He captained India in a record-breaking 68 Tests, winning 40 matches and becoming the fourth best captain in Test history.

"It's been seven years of hard work, toil and perseverance to take the team in the right direction," said the captain on social media.

I did the job with honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt for me as the Test Captain of India.

In 99 Tests, he has averaged 50.39 in the longer format. He led the side to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship, but lost to New Zealand.

India lost the three-game series to South Africa in Cape Town on Friday, with his last game as captain being a seven-wicket loss.

There have been many ups and downs along the way, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief.

I know it's not the right thing to do if I can't give 120% in everything I do.

I have absolute clarity in my heart and I can't be dishonest to my team.

More to come.
