The government has unveiled plans to protect England's national parks.

The proposals aim to improve access to nature and ensure landscapes are key to tackling climate change.

It followed a review of protections for national parks.

George Eustice said the plans were a new chapter in the story of protected landscapes.

The proposals to drive nature recovery and support communities that live and work in those areas will be the subject of the consultation.

The proposals include creating management plans for those in charge of the national parks, and encouraging local leaders to organize campaigns, events and volunteering projects to bring the public closer to nature.

The protections were looked at to see if they were still fit for purpose.

The author of the review said that they can change the story from decline to recovery by making them more welcoming and full of hope.

Natural England says that the Pandemic has highlighted inequalities surrounding access to green spaces, with people on low incomes being disadvantaged.

Increased access to nature is one of the aims of the new plans.

The fight against climate change is one of the main aims, along with protecting biodiversity and supporting people's health and wellbeing for the next 70 years and beyond.

Mr Eustice said that the reforms will help meet the international commitment to protect 30% of the land.

The 25-year environment plan has the government's goal of net zero emissions by the year 2050.
