Nvidia’s AI-powered scaling makes old games look better without a huge performance hit

The new God of War PC port and a tool that could let you improve the image quality of games that your graphics card can easily run are included in the latest game-ready driver from Nvidia. The tech is called Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution, or DLDSR, and it can be used to make most games look sharper by running them at a higher resolution than your monitor supports.

Dynamic Super Resolution tech has been around for a long time. DSR renders a game at a higher resolution than your monitor can handle, and then downscales it to your monitor's native resolution. This leads to an image with better sharpness but it also comes with a dip in performance. DSR can be used to get a boost in clarity if you only have a 1440p monitor and a graphics card that can run at 4K.

DLDSR takes DSR.

DLDSR uses artificial intelligence that can enhance the image. This means you can upscale less and still get the same image quality improvements. The image quality is similar to running at four times the resolution using DSR with only 2.25 times the resolution with DLDSR. The Prey: Digital Deluxe runs on a1080p monitor at a rate of over 100 frames per second, but it is only two frames per second slower than running at native1080p.

You may want to take those results with a grain of salt, as you will want to see one of the best-case examples. In the real world, you can get different results with different games, both in terms of how fast you play and what settings you have to run DLDSR in. You will probably be able to play around with it using one of your favorite older titles, though you will still need an RTX card, and they aren't easy to get right now.

Deep learning has had a lot of success with the company.

This isn't the first time that deep learning has been used to improve image quality and performance, it's gotten a lot of praise for its Deep Learning Super Sampling system. The God of War is one of the games that can be used with DLSS, but it is not on the list of games you can use with it.

A wide array of games will get better performance and graphics thanks to the new tech announced by the competitor of the graphics card. While it doesn't use the same methods as DLDSR, it is aiming towards the same goal and calls its approach Radeon Super Resolution.
