Air travel was born in the United States. Air travel in the United States was a bad experience. The US has some of the worst airports in the world. Inefficiencies, poor design, endless waits, and an overall sense of chaos abound.

Which U.S. airports are the worst? If you've ever been through a nightmare at an airport, you might want to look at our list of the country's worst airports. If your time of departure gets pushed back again, you should save the list.

10. Washington Dulles International Airport is located in Virginia.

The location is inconvenient and the layout is confusing.

When you let a master design an airport, this happens. You get a terminal that looks cool, but it's not very practical. Dulles may be easy on the eyes, but it does your sense of direction no favors. Getting from one not-quite-connected concourse to another requires navigating a sometimes baffling network of trains and tunnels, devised over time to overcome the original ground transport solution: a fleet of slow, tanklike people movers called "mobile lounges." They are mostly gone now.

The airport isn't a stop on the D.C. Metro rail system, and it's not easy to get to it from the city.

9. The airport is in Charleston, West Virginia.

The location is scary.

Some airports are designed to make prodigal sons and daughters return to their religions. The short runways at Chicago's Midway, icy and mountainous terrain in Aspen, Colorado, and too- close-for-comfort downtown buildings in San Diego are some of the reasons for prayer-prompting landings. The Federal Aviation Administration maintains a list of airports with hazardous conditions that need extra-skillful pilots.

West Virginia's Yeager Airport is the scariest of all because it sits atop a flattened hill that drops off on all sides. Going over the edge is a possibility if you overshooting the runway. The mountain is prone to mudslides like the one in 2015, which sent a chunk of land into the valley below. One of the safest years in aviation history happened in 2017: two cargo pilots were killed when their plane crashed in West Virginia.

8. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

There are problems such as flight delays and cancellation, and long lines due to understaffing.
_
The Texas giant has been one of the busiest airports in the country for a long time, thanks to the reshuffling by American Airlines that has sent more traffic to what was already the carrier's main hub. That move and severe staffing shortages have strained operations. Customer reviews at aviation rating sites like Skytrax are filled with complaints about DFW's long customs and immigration lines, closed restaurants and shops, extended waits at the baggage carousel, and overall disorganization.

The airport was ranked third for the most delays and canceled flights between July and July 2021. More than 20% of flights at DFW were late or canceled.

7. Denver International Airport.

Problems include bumpy landings and takeoffs, long TSA lines, parking issues, and construction hassle.

There is something called "mountain wave" turbulence that can occur during takeoff or landing at the Denver International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration describes the phenomenon as waves, similar to water flowing over rocks in a stream bed, when the wind speed is above 25 knots. The waves form from the ridge line and will be very strong up and down drafts. You might be all shook up when departing or approaching the airport's runways.
Things on the ground have been discombobulating. Construction projects have turned many terminals into mazes. Travelers are having trouble getting through security lines because of understaffed checkpoint, security lanes blocked off by construction, and passengers who slow the security process down by trying to carry on prohibited items. Two parking lots have been closed due to a lack of shuttle drivers.

6. The airport is called ClevelandHopkins International Airport.

There are problems with outdated facilities and limited accessibility.

Cleveland's decades-past-its-prime airport got a much-needed upgrade in 2016 Most of the renovations involved modernizing the main ticket hall's exterior, which amounted to little more than window dressing. Many areas are not nice. The United Airlines decision to cut back service to the area left Concourse D empty and wasted. The permanent Ground Transportation Center for shuttle drop-offs and pickup doesn't have to be a trip to a different county.
The Cleveland airport has seen an improvement in its popularity rating in the last few years, after placing dead last among medium-sized airports in J.D. Power's customer satisfaction survey. So you're doing well?

5. The Philadelphia International Airport.

Philadelphia's aging facility came in last place among large airports on a survey. Michael Taylor told Forbes that the biggest problem was getting there. He said it was a hassle. It takes longer to get there because of traffic. A lot of anxiety is created by that. You're anxious when you arrive. It seems that the TSA takes forever.

Some of this is not the airport's fault. Police understaffing, which has led to many officers getting pulled from traffic duty, hasn't helped speed things along because of the major lane closings on I-95.

In the wake of the J.D. Power results, officials admitted the need for renovations at the airport. The recently passed infrastructure bill should help with that. The upgrade can't wait.

4. O'Hare International Airport is located in Chicago.

There are problems with overcrowding, delays and cancellation.

37 million travelers passed through this facility every year before the swine flu hit. They did eventually. Because the airport was strained beyond capacity and located in a city prone to extreme weather conditions, delays and cancelations were common.

That's one reason why O'Hare ranked lowest in the "mega" airports category. In December 2021, O'Hare completed a 16-year, $6-billion plan that should make the place more pleasant and less prone to delays. I hope it's crossed!

3. Los Angeles International Airport.

There are problems with bad customer experience, traffic congestion, and confusing layout.

Passengers give bad scores. Getting there and getting around are the biggest challenges in Los Angeles. If you need to get from one terminal to another for a connecting flight, the airport has nine different terminals and is well-organized. In most cases, you will have to leave security, walk or ride a shuttle bus to the new terminal, where you will have to go through security again before proceeding to your gate. We mean to run as if pursued by lions. Additional hurdles are raised by ongoing construction projects.

Improvements have been completed recently, including the opening of more baggage gates and computerized handling at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, more upscale shops and restaurants, and an automated trolley to the car rental location. Will those changes make it easier to navigate? How can parking and traffic congestion ever improve without better public transit options than the inconvenient and impractical trains and buses currently required to get from downtown L.A. to the airport?

2. The airport is in New York City.

Delays and cancelations, construction, and poor ground transportation are some of the problems.
_

A major, multiyear project to modernize LaGuardia has resulted in airier, more contemporary spaces, streamlined check-in areas, upgraded restaurants, and cool features such as dancing fountains. The new design is a looker, with the exception of a hanging art installation that recalls the look of the coronaviruses. It's likely that you'll spend a lot of time in the older sections of the terminal if the gate areas don't get a facelift soon.

There is a bigger problem with an aesthetic makeover that can't be fixed: chronic flight delays caused by the congested airspace over New York City. The airport had the second-most delays and canceled flights in the nation from July to July. We are still waiting for a train that will take us directly from Midtown Manhattan to the terminals.

1. The Newark Liberty International Airport is in New Jersey.

There are problems such as delays/cancellations, poor amenities, and inconvenient location.

We are not the only ones who think Newark has the worst airport. Newark was ranked 116th out of 132 airports worldwide in AirHelp's most recent Global Airport Ranking. The ranking was based on delays and canceled flights as well as surveys of thousands of travelers.

Newark did poorly. In the last couple years, the airport had the worst on-time record in the nation, with nearly one in four flights getting delayed or canceled.
The region's airspace is congested and that has to do with that. Newark is an unpleasant place to get stuck. The airport was ranked last in RewardExpert's Airport Dining Scorecard due to overcrowding and other issues. It can be difficult for tourists to get to and from New York, requiring either an expensive cab or a ride on two different trains.
Things have to be bad when it looks like a better option.
