The success of Formula 1 Drive to Survive has led to a bigger push into sports docuseries. A show about the world of golf and tennis is in the works, and we learned this week that a show about the PGA Tour and men's major golf championships is on the way.
Box to Box Films is the same company that is producing all three shows. Equal time will be given to men and women in the tennis series. The names of the players involved haven't been revealed, but given the high-profile names taking part in Drive to Survive and the golf show, expect the tennis series to feature prominent figures.
The organizers of the four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as the governing bodies of tennis, have all been locked in with the company. The docuseries could start with some major drama.
Australian officials revoked the visa of the world's top-ranked men's player on Friday on health and good order grounds. Earlier this month, the world number one said that he was granted a medical exemption to travel to Australia and continue his quest for a record 21st men's Grand Slam singles title. He admitted to making an "error of judgment" by attending public events in December while waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test, but he denied that he was trying to get a exemption. He tested positive.
Drive to Survive helped boost the popularity of Formula 1. Tennis executives will be hoping for a similar effect from the upcoming docuseries. Last year's US Open drew an average of 817,000 viewers, the second-lowest viewing figures since the tournament was secured by Disney.
