New York Covid numbers are finally trending down, Gov. Hochul says

The New York City governor's office is on 3rd Avenue.

Hochul said Friday that New York is starting to turn the corner on the latest wave of the coronaviruses.

Hochul said at the press conference that the Covid positivity rate and the seven-day case average are now downward.

Hochul said that there will come a time when it's all over. We've waited a long time for that, but we're not there yet.

Hochul reported 177 new deaths from Covid, while noting that the metrics tend to lag behind the current trajectory of the virus.

"You've all done the right thing, and that is why we'll be at the forefront of the states seeing this long anticipated decline," Hochul said, predicting that New York is "turning the corner on the winter surge."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says New York has the highest vaccination rate. More than 70% of New Yorkers have been fully protected against Covid, and more than 70% have received at least one vaccine dose.

The Empire State has secured 64 million Covid tests, 15 million of which have already been distributed.

The omicron variant is more infectious than the prior Covid variant, which leads to a surge in hospitalizations and deaths.

New York's intensive care units have not become as overwhelmed as they were at the beginning of the epidemic.

The Biden administration was thanked by Hochul for sending medical teams to New York and five other states.

The agency that sent the additional staff said it would expand its policy to provide funding to states that used National Guard members to support hospitals.
