Three Santa Clause films were not enough. Disney is bringing back the holiday comedy as a limited series for Disney+, almost two decades after the release of the third one. Tim Allen will reprise his role as Santa in a story where he is looking for a new Santa to pass the sleigh.
The first Santa Clause was released in 1994 and was about a man named Scott Calvin who accidentally kills Santa and is brought to the North Pole, where he discovers he is contractually obligated to take over the role. The Santa is called the "Clause." He hates it at first, but eventually he embraces his new role, which strengthens his relationship with his kids. Two sequels were released in 2002 and 2006 to diminish the results.
The new limited series starts now. Scott is not as good of a Santa as he used to be, and with his family getting older, he needs to shift the balance back to them. He wants to be a better father and find a new Santa.
Jack Burditt, who has worked on 30 Rock, Modern Family, Frasier, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is the executive producer. Filming starts in March. It's not clear if other characters from the movies, like David Krumholtz, will return. If Allen is back, Disney is likely to bring back as many characters as possible to keep the series in line with the films. Which are better-than-average Christmas movies. The lovable everyman personality of Allen has always been a solid combination with Disney magic.
It is not known when The Santa Clause will be on the streamer, but it is likely that the studio will try and get it out for the holiday season.
