Ashes: Ollie Robinson must improve his fitness for Test cricket, says England bowling coach Jon Lewis

The first day of the fifth Test is in Hobart.

Head 101, Green 74.

England is yet to bat.

The scorecard is a summary of what happened.

Jon Lewis, the bowling coach, says that England seamer Ollie Robinson needs to improve on his fitness to keep up with the demands of Test cricket.

Robinson took two early wickets but only took eight overs because of a back spasm.

Australia recovered from 12-3 to finish the day at 241-5.

Lewis said that Robinson needs to improve his fitness.

He's played a lot of games of county cricket but international cricket is more intense and you play it all year round.

He's got to get used to the extra day, five days of Test cricket that comes with being a full-time international cricketer.

Robinson was threatening with the new ball and he was able to dismiss Australia's David Warner and Steve Smith for ducks.

When Robinson went down, England's four-man seam attack was weakened as Australia counter-attacked.

Since making his debut against New Zealand in the summer of 2015, Robinson has taken 37 of his 38 career Tests at an average of 21.16.

He missed the fourth match of the series because he was playing in the first three.

Lewis said that with the times we're in, there's not a lot of rest and recuperation between games.

He's going to have to deal with that. Is it a concern? It's one of the things he needs to work on.

"He's shown over the course of the English summer and this series so far he can put back to back games together but there's definitely areas he needs to work on."

Lewis did not leave the field on the first day because he was hoping that Robinson would be able to bowl on the second day.

He wouldn't have been able to bowl if he spent time off the field today.

"We're hoping with treatment overnight he can come back tomorrow and be free to bowl."

'Robinson was a handful' is an analysis.

Steve Finn said on the Test Match Special that there was no doubt that Ollie Robinson was a handful on that particular day. England had to manage their resources after he was injured. They will be hoping he wakes up feeling better.

If you only have four seamers on a pitch like that, you're taking a gamble by picking someone who may not have been fit to play. He probably would have been asked how he felt before the game, but he didn't last very long.
