Donald P. Bellisario's Quantum Leap is probably the most perfect television show in the history of the medium. The premise of the show, which saw a handsome scientist with a killer singing voice leap through history fixing various tragedies, is an infinite sandbox allowing writers and actors to play with pretty much any idea they liked. The chemistry between Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell was perfect. We still whisper "Oh, boy" when we find ourselves in a sticky situation. There are better shows out there. Somewhere.
Probably.
It is reported by Deadline that NBC is moving forward with a remake of the classic series, which ran on the network from 1989 to 1993 and then on USA for years after. Steven Lilien, Bryan Wynbrandt, and Bellisario are all involved in the project, as well as Deborah Pratt, who is the former QL executive producer.
There are a few things that diminish our joy at the announcement. The recent death of Dean Stockwell, who played Al, a guy from the future who helped Dr. Sam Beckett navigate any historical era he was stuck in, was the first and foremost thing. Stockwell's performance as the helpful hologram was an important part of the series, but not having him around for at least a brief appearance can detract.
Scott Bakula has said he is aware of the reboot, but he is not involved in it at the moment. The ending of the original series states that Dr. Beckett never returned from his travels. You have to get him in there somewhere.
