The third successful mission for Virgin Galactic's spinoff company, Virgin Orbit, took place this afternoon, when seven tiny satellites were lofted into the air. The Department of Defense had various research satellites in the payloads.

Less than a week ago, Virgin Orbit stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In August, Virgin Orbit announced that it would go public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, making it one of three small rocket launch companies to follow the trend in 2021. On Friday, January 7th, Dan Hart rang the opening bell at the stock exchange while the company put a model of its primary rocket on display in New York City.

Less than a week after Virgin Orbit began trading publicly.

Virgin Orbit is one of many rocket companies that have been around in the last few decades. The company has a unique approach to getting these satellites into space. Virgin Orbit's LauncherOne rocket is designed to take off from underneath the wing of a carrier aircraft. The plane is supposed to take the rocket up to an altitude of 35,000 feet. In mid-air, the main engine of the LauncherOne ignites and propels the rest of the payloads into Earth's orbit.

Cosmic Girl took off from a runway at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, where Virgin Orbit has a testing facility. The plane flew out west over the ocean. Eric Bippert was the pilot of the plane. He was accompanied in the cockpit by Matthew Stannard, a test pilot for the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom. Stanny initiated the release of LauncherOne from underneath Cosmic Girl's wing.

On the same day that Virgin Orbit was launched, a bunch of small satellites were sent into space by the same company. 105 small satellites were hoisted into the sky by the launch of Transporter 3. It is another option for small satellite manufacturers to get their products into space. Since the capacity of the Falcon 9 is bigger than that of a smaller rocket, it can carry a bunch of small satellites at once into space. The Smallsat Rideshare Program is intended to launch at least three dedicated rocket rideshares a year.

The flight was called Above the Clouds.

There are downsides to rocket rideshares. Small satellite manufacturers need to wait until they have enough satellites to launch in order to do so. Logistical issues can come with launching so many satellites at the same time. Virgin Orbit can provide a quicker route to the launchpad if they tailor their missions to just a few customers. Virgin Orbit claims that the satellite was added last minute. Tony Gingiss, Virgin Orbit's COO, said that they got them on board in just two weeks. The nosecone on top of the rocket was integrated within 24 hours of signing the contract.

Virgin Orbit will need to up its launch cadence in order to offer a rapid path to space for customers. The company has had about six months between launches. Dan Hart says the company is targeting six launches this year, which would double the launch cadence. Two of those launches are supposed to take place in the UK at Spaceport Cornwall.
