Ford Motor Co.'s plans to accelerate production and sales of battery-powered SUVs and pickup trucks are pushing its market cap past that of larger rival General Motor to become the second-most valuable U.S. automaker behind electric car makerTesla.
The stock price of the company rose 4% to $25.50 in the afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange. In January, the shares are up more than 20%. GM's valuation increased to $91 billion. With a market cap of $1 trillion,Tesla is the world's most valuable automaker, despite having only a fraction of the annual vehicle sales of either GM or Ford. The Cybertruck pickup is delayed, and that's why the stock fell 4%.

The Mach-E electric SUV will be double production in two years, according to Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford. He said this month that Ford would increase its annual production target for the F-150 to 150,000 units from 80,000 units.

The stock market's attraction to the Ford EV story continues to take us by surprise, according to an equity analyst at Morgan Stanley. TheMustang Mach-E that Ford brought to market was seen as a viable competitor to the Model Y by consumers.

Ford has a 12% stake in Rivian. Ford was able to move FASTER to market because of the decision to modify the existing F-150 design. Will it be the most capable EV pickup truck? It is available at least 1 year ahead of a similarly priced (GM Chevrolet) Ultium E-Silverado and can have an impact on share sooner than its peers.

The base price of the Lightning is $39,970 before federal and state incentives, and it has a driving range of 230 miles per charge for a version aimed at commercial customers. It will cost more than $90,000 to get a top-end model that can go 300 miles per charge. The truck has at least 200,000 reservations. The Cybertruck would have a base price of $39,900 and a range of 250 miles per charge. There is no model of the car that has come to market and sold at the low end of Musk's initial estimate.
According to media reports, the initial availability of Cybertruck was removed from the website byTesla last month.
