Self-Driving Car Has Giant Airbag for When It Accidentally Plows Into Pedestrians

Nuro has come up with a delivery vehicle that has a giant external-facing airbag in case it ever hits a cyclist or pedestrian, a rather unusual approach to ensuring humans and delivery robots can coexist peacefully on public streets and walkways.

The cute little cart is either designed with safety in mind, or it will run down pedestrians.

The company said they needed to make it safe, electric and easy to operate.

Softening the blow.

The company claims the design is 20 percent smaller than the average passenger car and will give pedestrians and bicyclists plenty of room on the sidewalks.

The little buggy has an external pedestrian airbag that is designed to reduce the force of impact and number of injuries in the event of a collision.

The cart can hit an operating speed of 45 mph, twice as fast as your average cyclist, because of the space that is given to maneuver.

Nuro makes no mention of its vehicle ever rolling down sidewalks in its announcement, but given its primary purpose, it is bound to get in the close vicinity of pedestrians regardless.

The vehicle has a field of view to make sure it doesn't hit anyone in the first place.

Hauling groceries.

The vehicle has a 27 square foot compartment that can hold up to 24 bags of groceries or 500 pounds of cargo. The compartment can be cooled down to a chilly 22 degrees Fahrenheit, or heated up to a toasty 116 degrees depending on the cargo.

The proof is in the pudding. We have yet to see what it would be like to share space with a delivery vehicle.

There are External Airbags for when the robot crashes into people.
