The Texans have fired head coach David Culley, according to a source.

Culley said on Sunday that he expected to return for a second season. The Texans' ownership and front office decided to fire the coach on Thursday after taking a few days to evaluate him.

Culley became the oldest first-time NFL head coach at age 65 when he was hired by the Texans. Culley, who was hired in January 2021, was one of three Black coaches in the NFL. Mike Tomlin is the only current Black head coach in the NFL.

Culley spent two seasons as the Baltimore Ravens' assistant head coach, passing game coach and wide receiver coach before he was hired in Houston. Culley was an assistant in college and the NFL.

The Texans won the same number of games in Culley's first season as a head coach as they did in the previous season. Culley did it with a team that has only had one first-round pick in the last four years.

Houston was without its quarterback, who requested a trade in January after Caserio was hired. The first of 23 civil lawsuits were filed against him less than two months later. He was on the active roster all season despite facing 22 active lawsuits. Each game the quarterback was a scratch.

J.J. Watt requested to be released after the 2020 season and now plays for the Arizona Cardinals.

In the season opener, the Texans dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars, before losing veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor in Week 2 with a left hamstring injury. Taylor was replaced by David Mills, who went 0-6 in his six starts.

Taylor was benched for Mills after he struggled in his return from injury.

Houston's offense was ranked 31st in Football Outsiders' DVOA.
