Biden says U.S. to provide high quality masks for free to Americans

US President Joe Biden holds up a mask as he gives an update on his Administration's whole-of-government COVID-19 surge response at the White House in Washington, DC, on January 13, 2022.

President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the U.S. will give high quality masks to Americans for free.

Biden said the U.S. has tripled the national stock of N95 masks to make sure they are widely available. He said that masks are important to controlling the spread of omicron.

Biden said that the mask is not always affordable or convenient for some Americans. Next week, we will announce how we will make high quality masks available to the American people for free.

The N95 masks would be given to every person in the U.S. for free. Everyone would get a package with masks. The legislation has 50 cosponsors.

The mass production and distribution of N95 masks is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of the Covid virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will soon update its masking guidance to inform Americans about the different levels of protection different masks provide, according to Dr. Rochelle Walensky. The CDC recommends that any mask is better than no mask.

The CDC director said during a White House Covid update that the recommendation is not going to change and that all Americans should wear a well-fitting mask.

Everyone, regardless of vaccine status, should wear masks in public places with high or substantial virus transmission. According to the CDC, most of the US has high transmission of the virus. 98% of all Covid cases in the U.S. are represented by Omicron, according to the CDC.

N95 and surgical masks are 99% effective at blocking virus particles, while fabric masks are only 50% effective. The study was published in a peer-reviewed journal.
