Pass-rusher Whitney Mercilus makes surprise return to Green Bay Packers practice

The top-seeded Green Bay Packers could get back for their playoff run with Whitney Mercilus.

The veteran pass-rusher was placed on injured reserve after he tore his left bicep. 60 days after the injury, he practiced on Thursday.

The Packers signed the former first-round pick just days after the Texans released him. He was injured in his fourth game with the Packers and had one sack and two quarterback hits.

He was placed on injured reserve and even coach Matt LaFleur thought he was done of the season.

"That's a difficult one," LaFleur said at the time. I feel bad for him. He would've had a second sack on the play in which he was injured. This guy is a pro's pro and he brings stability to that room. He has been doing this for a long time. It's just one of those unfortunate things.

Mercilus said he signed with the Packers for one reason.

He said that he was trying to get a championship. I thought the best option was to come here with the winning mentality.

Several players who did not finish the regular season but could return for the Packers' first playoff game, including Mercilus, are in danger of missing out. Outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith, who has not played since the season opener because of back surgery, is one of the people on that list. The players practiced this week.

The Packers got back two players for last week's regular-season finale who had missed time: left tackle David Bakhtiari and center Josh Myers.
