The study that identified cannabis compounds that may prevent infections with the Covid-19 virus caused a huge uproar of interest this week as people speculated that weed could be used to fight the disease.

The researchers from Oregon State University found that two compounds found in the plant can bind to the coronaviruses and possibly block a crucial stage.
The researchers found that the compounds hindered the ability of the coronaviruses to get into human cells.
The paper caught the attention of enthusiasts, including social media users online and mainstream comedians, as they took the findings as evidence of weed's prowess in fighting the disease.
Dr. Sodergren told Forbes that the results were interesting, but cautioned that the findings would need to be confirmed in animal models and tested on humans in clinical trials.
The data does not show that cannabis compounds can prevent or cure Covid infections in humans, Sodergren said.

Further studies are needed. Sodergren told Forbes that the findings needed further scientific interrogation, but noted that the majority of positive in vitro findings in drug discovery do not translate to a benefit seen in humans after conducting clinical trials.
Finding candidates for possible drugs and treatments can take a long time. To speed things up, researchers often test large numbers of known compounds to see if they produce a biological or chemical response in line with what might be expected in a drug treating the condition they are trying to find a treatment for. An approved drug could still be more than a decade away, even though positive responses like the cannabis compounds are but the first or many filters the compounds must pass.
