Kevin McCarthy says he won't cooperate with the House Capitol-riot committee

Kevin McCarthy wouldn't cooperate with the January 6 committee.

McCarthy said that the committee investigating the Capitol riot was illegitimate.

He said that the abuse of power by the select committee will harm the institution going forward.

He said that the committee was not doing "legitimate" work.

Speaker Pelosi rejected the Republican members I named to serve on the committee, which is why this committee is not conducting a legitimate investigation.

It's not serving any purpose. The only goal of the committee is to try to damage its political opponents, like the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee and the DOJ did.

His statement came hours after the committee asked McCarthy for his voluntary contribution, a sign that the investigation is honing in on top Republicans.

The committee noted in a letter to McCarthy that he acknowledged speaking to Donald Trump as the riot was underway and that he spoke of Trump's actions on the House floor a week later.

McCarthy said in his speech that Trump was responsible for the attack, and that he should be censured. He called for the people to move on from the insurrection after he defended efforts to overturn the election results.

McCarthy said in his statement that the committee wants to interview him about public statements that have been shared with the world and private conversations not related to the Capitol violence. I don't have anything else to add.
