Aston Villa transfer news: Lucas Digne 'didn't expect to leave Everton this way' as he closes on £25m move

Lucas Digne told his fans that he didn't expect it to end this way, as he prepares to leave for Villa.

Digne was due in Birmingham on Wednesday for a medical, but Villa beat out other teams for his signature.

The fall out between the player and the manager resulted in him being out since the 4-1 home defeat to the Reds on December 1.

The manager of the club said earlier this month that Digne asked to leave the club, and that he accused the left-back of putting his needs ahead of the team's.

Digne hit back on Wednesday night, saying that sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a love affair.

Digne was the top chance creator last season.

Digne thanked him for three-and-a-half years in blue. I am forever thankful for the warm feelings theEvertonians have given me.

I have been a part of the family. I give back to the fans on and off the pitch. Goodison fans and players have been a part of my life, not only on a match day, but in everyday life as well.

One year ago, I signed a new contract with the ambition of staying in this club for a long time, giving everything for my club, for the development and project that I believed in, and for the passionate fans.

I wanted to help the club back where it belongs. In some matches, I wore the captain's armband.

Everything must end. I didn't think it would end this way. I am sad because of what has happened and some things that were said about me.

The Transfer Talk panel discussed the qualities that Lucas Digne would bring to Villa if he were to join.

I won't enter a war on words with anyone. I don't feel that I deserve that, the fans don't, and the club doesn't.

I wish you the best, because there are so many good and decent people in and around the area who want the best for this club and not only for themselves.

"Thank you, to all of you wonderful, proud and passionate trueEvertonians." It has been an honor and a pleasure to play for you, the fans, the people, because a club does not belong to a player or a manager, but to the fans. Wherever I go, I will always carry you with me.

It only takes one person to destroy a love affair.

Philippe Coutinho was brought to the club on loan from Barcelona by Steven Gerrard, just a week after Digne's likely arrival at Villa.

Yves Bissouma is nearing the end of his contract at the Amex Stadium and Villa are interested in signing him.

There has been a lot of progress on the new stadium.

Vitaliy Mykolenko is a replacement for Digne.

In the January window, the Toffees secured the services of Rangers and Scotland right-back Nathan Patterson in a deal worth £16m.

Digne has played in 15 games and scored once for the 15th-ranked club, who will be looking to improve on their 15th place position when they travel to Norfolk on Saturday.

Would Digne be a good fit for Villa?

Sky Sports' Peter Smith gave an analysis.

What will the Frenchman bring to the group?

Over the past three-and-a-half seasons, Digne has been a key player for the club, despite his recent troubles.

Peter Smith explains what Lucas Digne would bring to Villa if he moved there.

He has been with the team for less than a year, but he has already made a difference, recording more assists than any other player.

Vitaliy Mykolenko, who played for the Ukrainian national team at the Euros last summer, cannot match Digne's quality and experience at this moment in time, and he has been signed by the club.

Digne has over 40 caps for France and has won titles with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

It will be his creative skills that will be exciting. Digne is in his prime at a time when he is one of the best full-backs in the league.

Sky Sports has a January transfer window.

Who will be moving in January?

The January transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday January 31.
