Scientists Taught a Goldfish How to Drive Its Tank Around, And It's Adorable

According to an Israeli study, Goldfish might be able to drive.

A goldfish's innate navigation abilities allowed it to steer a robotic vehicle towards a target if given a food reward.

The team placed a fish tank on wheels.

The experiment was done. Givon et al. are involved in Behavioural Brain Research.

A camera system recorded the fish's movements in the water and translated them into directions, which moved the contraption in the direction where the fish bumped up against the glass.

A colorful mark on the wall of the experiment room can be seen through the clear sides of the tank in a video released by the university.

I am excited to share a new study led by Shachar Givon and Ohad Ben Shahar that shows Goldfish can learn to navigate a small robotic vehicle on land. goldfish were trained to drive a platform that responds to the fish's movement.

The fish got a food reward when it steered the vehicle to the mark.

The fish were trained after a few days and they were able to reach the target.

Even if they were interrupted in the middle by hitting a wall, they were still able to do it.

Shachar Givon, a PhD student at the university's Life Sciences department who worked on the experiment, said that the research shows that navigation ability is universal.
