Scientists from Lancaster University say that we might be able to combine the two components. "UltraRAM" is a memory technology that combines the non-volatility of a data storage memory, like flash, with the speed, energy-efficiency, and endurance of a working memory, like DRAM." The breakthrough was detailed in a recent paper. The fundamental science behind UltraRAM is that it uses the unique properties of compound semiconductors, which are commonly used in photonic devices such as LEDs, lasers, and IR detectors, and can now be mass-produced on Silicon. The latest incarnation of Silicon is better than the technology tested on Gallium Arsenide wafers, according to the researchers. UltraRAM will offer data storage times of at least 1,000 years, and it will be one hundred to one thousand times better than flash, according to some estimates. This novel memory type sounds hard for tech companies to ignore because of its qualities.

UltraRAM is intended to break the divide between storage and RAM. You could use it as a one-shot solution to fill the requirements that are currently separate. That would mean that you would get a piece of UltraRAM, which would cover both your storage and RAM needs. If the shift lives up to its potential, it would be a great way to push the trend towards in-memory processing. Your storage would be your memory, with UltraRAM.
