Rich Paul, Ben Simmons' agent, met with the Philadelphia 76ers' president of basketball operations and general manager on Wednesday, but the sides remain at a stalemate over the All-Star guard's immediate future.

Simmons is not close to honoring the team's hopes for a return to the court this season because of the steep asking price of the team.

The meeting at a downtown Philadelphia restaurant was described as professional, but Morey reiterated the franchise's stance that it won't make a Simmons trade unless it believes the return gives it a chance to compete for a championship, sources said.

Sources said that Paul told the 76ers that Simmons' mental health hurdles continue to preclude him from a return to play with the team, and that the desire for a trade out of Philadelphia remains.

Simmons has a five year, $177 million maximum contract and is subject to fines for missing games and team functions.

The Philadelphia 76ers have won seven straight games, but are out of the running for the Eastern Conference title without Ben Simmons.

Sources said that the 76ers are targeting top 25-caliber players for trades, but those kinds of assets have yet to be made available to them in offers. Sources told ESPN that some teams have described the asking price for Simmons' deal as growing in price.
