The leader of the girl group the Ronettes was the cat-eyed, bee-hived rock starRonnie Spector. She was 78 years old.
Her family said that she died of cancer. Ronnie lived her life with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. The statement said she was filled with love and gratitude. There were no other details revealed.
The Ronettes were one of the premier acts of the girl-group era, touring England with the Rolling Stones and befriending the Beatles.
Spector, her sister and cousin scored hits with pop masterpieces like "Be My Baby," "Walking in the Rain," and "I Can Hear Music."
We were not afraid to be hot. In her memoir, she said that that was their gimmick. We squeezed our bodies into the tightest skirts we could find when we saw The Shirelles walk on stage. We would get out on stage and hike them up to show our legs even more.
The Washington Heights area of Manhattan was where Veronica Bennett and her multiracial bandmates grew up. They became noteworthy for their use of eyeliner and mascara when they began singing and dancing in clubs.

She wrote in her memoir that the louder they applauded, the more mascara we put on the next time. We didn't have a hit record to grab their attention, so we had to make an impression with our style. We just took the look we were born with and extended it.
In March 1963, Estelle Bennett arranged an auditioning in front of Phil Spector, known for his big, brass-and-drum style dubbed the "wall of sound." They were signed to a record label. After being signed, they sang backup for other acts.
The group released their first album in 1964. Five of its tracks made it to the US charts.
She told People magazine in 2017: "nothing excites me more than just being onstage, having fun and flirting and winking to the guys and stuff like that." I have so much fun. When I go out and they say, "Ladies and gentlemen...", my heart stops for a minute, "Ronnie Spector and the Ronettes!" I can go on singing forever if the crowd reacts the way I want them to.
The Ronettes broke up after touring Germany. She said he kept her locked up in their Beverly Hills mansion. Her 1990 book, "Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts And Madness", tells of an unhappy story of abuse. The couple separated in 1974. In 2009, Phil Spector was sentenced to prison for the murder of Lana Clarkson, and he died in 2020.
The influence ofRonnie Spector was felt far and wide. Billy Joel wrote a song called "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" in honor of the man. Amy Winehouse often referred to her as an inspiration.
The song "Be My Baby" is used in the opening of "Mean Streets" and in the title sequence of "Dirty Dancing" and the closing credits of "Baby Mama." It was on TV in both "The Wonder Years" and "Moonlighting".
When the Ronettes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rolling Stones' drummer remembered opening for them in England in the 1960's. Richards said that they could sing through a wall of sound. They did not need anything. They touched my heart and kept touching it.
After the Ronettes broke up, Spector continued to tour and make music, including recording "Take Me Home Tonight" with Eddie Money and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
She released her first album in 20 years, "Last of the Rock Stars", in 2006 and it featured appearances by the Raconteurs and the Raveonettes. In 2010 she released a doo-wop Christmas EP called "Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever" and in 2016 she released "English Heart", her covers of songs from Britain in the 1960s.
She is survived by her husband and two sons.
