Marriott Eliminating Air And Hotel Awards Effective Next Wednesday

Marriott travel packages used to be one of the sweetest spots in Marriott Rewards, just as Nights and Flights was a great value option in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. These redemptions are no longer valid.

The introduction of peak season pricing gave award category-based certificates a new use case, even though they lost most of their luster when Marriott Bonvoy was introduced four years ago.

If you used these packages, you came out behind with upper-tier properties. If you wanted a 100,000 mile transfer and a seven night stay at a category 4 or higher hotel, you could still get a savings of 90,000 points.

The Marriott Bonvoy program is a head and shoulders above the other programs. When a standard suite is available, those other two don't guarantee late check-out or suite upgrades. Bonvoy doesn't live up in practice.

Marriott just announced their new program. We get something closer to the program on the elite side, as expected, thanks to the strong benefits of the Starwood program. We get something closer to what Marriott has offered on earning and redemption, because Marriott was strong on earning and redemption.
