The New York Giants have been hitting new lows. John Mara admitted that he has never been embarrassed by the state of his franchise.

"Yes." Mara said it was the most embarrassed he had been. I kept thinking that we hit rock bottom and then it got worse.

The Giants went winless for six straight games, scoring just one point during that stretch. Dave Gettleman retired Monday and they fired coach Joe Judge on Tuesday.

Mara admitted he wasn't happy with Judge's rant at the news conference after the loss in Chicago. The back-to-back quarterback sneaks in this week's loss to the Washington Football Team were not his favorite plays.

He insists that they were a small factor in the overall scheme of things.

The Giants moved on from a coach for the third time in less than two years because they felt they had no other choice. They were about to start a search for a new general manager and likely needed a lot of changes to the offensive coaching staff.

Even though he still believes in a good coach, Mara didn't think it would work if they kept Judge for a third season.

Mara said that he didn't see a clear path to get out of the hole unless we blew it up and started all over again.

Even though ownership will have final approval, the Giants are looking for a general manager who will drive the coaching search. The move to dismiss Judge seems to have been made to give the new GM more flexibility.

Mara isn't looking at it as a package deal for the general manager and coach. That doesn't seem to be the case at all.

The Giants want to have a more thorough and comprehensive general manager search. Mara admitted that it was rushed when they hired Gettleman.

Gettleman was the general manager for four years. Pat Shurmur and Judge were taken down by his tenure. The Giants have fired a coach within two seasons three times.

Mara insists the jobs are desirable despite the recent mistakes.

We're not going to be able to interview even 20% of the people we've had inquires about, based on the number of inquiries I've had. He said that this is a very desirable job. We have a lot of capital coming up. I think people want to work for this organization. I am happy that so many people are interested in the job and that some of them have a chance to get it. We haven't been turned down.

The future of quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley will be decided by the new general manager and coach. The Giants have to make a decision on whether to pick up the fifth-year option on Jones' contract. He is set to play on his fifth-year option next season.

Mara and Steve Tisch have the biggest job of all. They have to get the hires right to get the Giants back on track. In the past 10 seasons, the franchise has only made the playoffs once.

Fans have the right to be skeptical about whether they will get it right.

Mara said she hadn't given them any reason to believe that. It's up to me and Steve to make the right choices to earn back their trust. That is not going to happen in a day or two. It is going to take some time. Getting the GM pick done correctly and hiring the right head coach is the first part of the process. We have to earn their trust again in that process. It's not going to happen overnight.
