Canalys: Worldwide PC shipments soared in 2021 to 341 million units

It would be easy to think that PC sales dropped last year because of the chip shortages. Canalys reports that PC shipments grew 15% over the course of the year, and were up 27% over the course of the year.

The fourth-quarter numbers were up 1% over the previous year, but the best year since 2012 was still to come.

Canalys senior analyst Ishan Dutt pointed out that despite the chip supply issues, PCs had a great year, and he believes that it will become the norm to have multiple PCs in the same home in developed areas of the world.

Despite the constant cloud of supply constraints, the market to post double-digit growth over an impressive 2020, speaks volumes about how strong PC demand has been over the last 12 months. He said that the most important developments in 2021 were the large increases in PC penetration and usage rates.

The Big 3 PC makers were: Dell, HP and Lenovo. While everyone had a good year, Apple had the largest growth number year-over-year at 28.3%, while Acer was second with 21.8% growth in spite of being fifth overall in terms of shipment numbers.

The two companies with the highest market share were HP and Lenovo. Apple was fourth with 8.5%.

Canalys still believes that there will be a strong year for PC sales in 2022, despite the chip shortages that are expected to persist into the new year. The market would likely have been bigger in 2021 if not for the supply issues, according to Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi.

The primary reason we are in a shortage situation is that demand is out of control. The PC industry would have grown faster and be even bigger if the supply situation had been better, Doshi told me.

He sees a market that will continue to grow. The demand for better and faster PCs is more pronounced than ever, not just in work, but also at home. He said that the growth is here to stay because of the importance of PCs.
