Taiwanese research firm TrendForce says that the new iPhones will have a 48-megapixel camera. This refers to the rear-facing Wide camera, which is currently 12MP on the iPhone 13 Pro models.
The analyst who believes the upgraded camera will support 8K video recording is one of the sources who has mentioned it.
Increasing the camera's count while keeping the sensor size the same results in less light being captured in low-light photos. As a solution, Kuo has previously said that the next generation of the device will support both 48 and 12 cameras, which would likely be achieved with a process known as pixel binning.
The use of a "super-pixel" for improved low-light sensitivity is already being used on some phones. The high-resolution 48- and 12-megapixel photos that the iPhone 14 Pro models can shoot are still of higher quality if they are binned.
The large file size of 48-megapixel photos makes the iPhone 14 Pro models likely to shoot 12-megapixel photos by default.
In September, Apple is expected to announce four new models, including a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max with a 48-megapixel camera.
