PCIe 6.0 is coming for the speedy SSDs and GPUs of the future

The specification for the PCIe 6.0 has just been finalized, but the consumer version of the Express has just begun arriving. The final specifications for the 6.0 version of PCIe have been published by the PCI Special Interest Group, doubling the bandwidth over the 5.0 version up to a theoretical maximum speed of 128 gigaflops on an x16 slot.

The first super fast PCIe 5.0 SSDs appeared just before the Consumer Electronics Show, promising read speeds of up to 14GBps. With the doubling of the PCIe 6.0 speed, we would expect to see the amount of storage offered go up to 28GBps.

The current specifications of the PCIe 6.0.

The group is called the PCI Special Interest Group.

Since the introduction of the spec in 2003 the doubling of the speeds has been achieved by the PCI Special Interest Group. The signaling technology has been changed to achieve the bandwidth gains this time. It is described as the largest in the history of the standard.

All previous generations of PCIe are compatible with the PCIe 6.0 architecture. It will allow any existing hardware that uses earlier specifications to work in the new hosts, and it will help with the transition to the new specification.

We shouldn't expect to see PCIe 6.0 hardware for another 12 to 18 months. The new spec will likely be used by some server and consumer hardware in the next few years. Get ready to hear a lot more about the things that will happen in the year 2022.
