Not for consumer inkjets.

The printers are the worst. They are unreliable, they use a lot of ink, and their manufacturers have been known to use scare tactics to encourage you to buy from them. Canon is getting a taste of its own medicine. Canon is forced to teach customers how to circumvent its own DRM after some of its own toner were detected as fakes.

Canon is facing challenges in procuring certain electronic components that are used in its consumables for its printers, according to the company's own support website. Canon has been hit by the chip shortage, too, and only the components it doesn't have are used to power video game consoles and yourTesla'susb port.

Canon now instructs customers on how to use "counterfeit" versions of their own genuine ones, because of the shortage of Semiconductors.

Canon says there is a simple solution. You can see all of the warnings about the malfunctioning of your printer. Ignore them. You will be good to go if you hit the close button.

Canon shows how to ignore the warning and hit the close button.

The image is Canon.

If you are hoping to get an approved-bypassing-of-DRM on your home printer, you might be out of luck, as Canon only has big workplace printers on the list of affected models.

Techdirt points out that Canon is currently facing down a lawsuit involving some alleged behavior that seems even more egregious than the typical DRM tricks: Queens resident David Leacraft claims his Canon Pixma All-in-One doesn't even Scan documents unless it has ink. We checked, and Canon hasn't yet issued a response to that lawsuit in court, but multiple posts on Canon's official support forums suggest that the ridiculous restriction is real.

All ink tanks must be installed in the printer in order to use the functions of the printer. Replacing the empty ink tank with a new one will resolve the issue. One rep wrote in 2020 that there was no way to fix it.

If you get a 'Ink Out' error, you won't be able to use the unit until the ink is replaced.

We will let you know if the lawsuit goes anywhere.

I recently discovered that some of us still need printers, though not always for signing and scanning documents. If you can't get out of it, we have a guide on how to choose one.
