Jon Watts will attempt to cheat death after helming one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. Final Destination 6 is the sixth film in the hit horror franchise and will be directed by Max.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the new script is being written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor. There is no word on what Watts' story is, but you would think that previous rumors of the film being set in the world of first responders is no longer true.
The original Final Destination was released in 2000 and was a hit. It followed a group of high school students who exited a plane when one of their friends had a vision of it crashing, only for that to come true and death to follow up to collect. Many of the other sequels have become cult favorites. There has been a lot of talk about bringing the series back since the fifth film was released in 2011. Patrick and Marcus wrote a script at one point, but Watts' idea is likely to have wiped it clean.
After directing two small independent films, Watts was hired by Sony and Marvel to make Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since then, he's focused solely on Spider-Man, Far From Home and No Way Home, which are all now the third highest-grossing films in the history of the company. It's sixth all time in the U.S. and eighth worldwide. It is still in theaters.
Watts' path is already set, even though success like that usually opens doors in Hollywood. He is writing and directing a movie for Apple, and is also working on a Fantastic Four movie. Watts is a big fan of Final Destination so he will probably put that franchise on his to-do list as well.
