According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Brian Flores wanted authority over the general manager before he was fired.
Jackson reported that Flores wanted more control and that the authority was formalized to eliminate the contract annoyance of the general manager.
Flores wanted the final say on "virtually everything" and more people to report to him.
"What is odd about this is that the person who likes to avoid conflict gave everything Flores wanted," Jackson wrote. There were no players on the roster that Flores didn't sign off on. It wasn't enough for Grier to appease Flores.
The report said that Flores was arrogant and had a bristling personality. He was thought to be hard to read and that he wasn't personable.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Stephen Ross decided to side with his general manager, despite thefrustration and tension between him and Flores.
It was surprising that Flores was fired. Despite missing the playoffs in each of his three seasons at the helm, he led the Dolphins to two straight winning campaigns despite taking over a stripped-down roster in 2019.
The team was without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for several games due to injury, but it was still an impressive run as Miami finished iwth a 9-8 record.
With Flores out in Miami, it appears he will be able to find a job soon. The 40-year-old is set to interview for the Chicago Bears' head coaching position and is expected to be in the mix for several other vacancies around the league.
It's not clear who the Dolphins may target to fill their open position. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, the New England Patriots offensive assistant Josh McDaniels and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive assistant Byron Leftwich could all draw interest.
