Water has been found on the surface of the Moon, marking the first time scientists have found evidence of the substance on Earth. Chinese researchers claim that the landers detected signs of water molecule or hydroxyl, a close chemical cousin of H2O. The composition of regolith was analyzed by a spectrometer in close proximity to its landing site. Luna's surface is much less dry than that of the Earth because most of the soil has a water concentration of less than 120 parts per million.
Chinese scientists think most of the molecule came to the Moon through a process called solar wind implantation. The hydrogen atoms were driven to the lunar surface by the charged particles from the sun. NASA found water on the sunlit surface of the Moon using an airborne telescope. Scientists had believed that the Moon was completely dry due to its lack of atmosphere. There was no atmosphere to protect water from the sun's harsh radiation.
