Healthcare tech platform Doctolib acquires encryption startup Tanker

Doctolib is expected to close the acquisition of Tanker today. Doctolib is a French company that develops a software-as-a-service product to help doctors and medical workers. Doctolib is a booking platform that connects doctors with patients. 60 million people have used the service in Europe, and 300,000 health professionals pay for it.

The tanker is used to help healthcare tech companies secure user data. The startup has developed a protocol that can be used in a web app, a mobile app or a desktop app.

Messages and files that are shared between patients and health professionals are end-to-end encryption after you add Tanker to your product. The private encryption key is not accessible to Tanker and its customers. If you are not the sender or the recipient, you can't get rid of the data.

Doctolib, Alan and Qare are three healthcare startup that are listed on the website of Tanker. In June 2020, Doctolib announced that it added end-to-end encryption.

The transaction between Doctolib and Tanker was reported in a regulatory filing. The acquisition was mentioned in a previous regulatory filing. You can see the documents on Pappers.

A lawyer writes in a letter that Doctolib plans to acquire the shares of the company. The transaction would be conducted based on the terms of the agreement protocol signed on December 9th, 2021, which involves transferring 100% of the shares of the capital of the company Tanker for the benefit of Doctolib.

The closing date for the transaction is January 11th, 2022, according to the most recent filing. The acquisition is currently happening, according to another source. We reached out to Doctolib, but received no response.

The legal documents show that Doctolib is acquiring Tanker in a cash and stock transaction, which would value it at between $28 million and $34 million.

There is a valuation enigma.

Yesterday, I wrote about Doctolib's press conference. Doctolib co-founder and CEO Stanislas Niox-chateau said they have stopped communicating with each other for several years. Every quarter, every year, investors invest for the first time based on our long-term project.

The company said that it had a valuation of $1 billion. That is the last time Doctolib talked about funding rounds.

That is not the most recent funding round. General Atlantic invested over $60 million in the company in February 2020.

The Doctolib share is worth 170.21, based on the acquisition by Tanker. Doctolib has around 18 million shares and could be worth around 3 billion.

Doctolib has 300,000 customers and its starting price is 129 per month. Maybe Doctolib's shares were a bit overvalued as a gesture for investors. Maybe Doctolib is about to raise at a higher valuation. It's still a mystery for now.

300,000 doctors and medical workers use Doctolib.
