Australian Open: Emma Raducanu loses as Andy Murray wins in Sydney Tennis Classic first round



The Australian Open first-round opponents of Emma and Andy will be revealed on Thursday.

Andy Murray is through to the second round of the Sydney Tennis Classic despite being heavily beaten by Britain's Emma Raducanu.

The US Open champion was defeated by Elena Rybakina.

Murray will face Basilashvili in the second round after beating Durasovic 6-3 6-1 in 72 minutes.

The Australian Open starts on Monday in Melbourne and will feature Murray and Raducanu.

In just 55 minutes, the 19-year-old was beaten by the 19-year-old from Kazakhstan, as she struggled with her serve.

She lost the first set and was down by three in the second before winning her only game of the match.

The British number one, who won a Grand Slam at the US Open last year, will be the 17th seed for the Australian Open.

She recently came out of isolation after contracting Covid-19, but her preparation has been hampered by her withdrawal from the first tournament of the season.

The former world number one will be making his first appearance at the Grand Slam since his emotional first-round exit in 2019.

Murray had surgery on his hip for the second time and made a comeback after he was forced to retire.

"It is nice to get my range and hopefully I can carry that through to the Australian Open," said Murray, who lost in the first round of the Melbourne Summer Series.

The Australian Open main draw has not been reached by Swan before.

Liam Broady and Britain'sKatie Swan both made it to the second round of Australian Open qualification.

Swan beat Australia's Abbie Myers to set up a tie against Bulgaria's Viktoriyya Tomova.

Broady fought back from a set down to win.

The 28-year-old, who has never reached the main draw of the Australian Open, will face an American in the second round.

Jodie Burrage,Katie Boulter, and Francesca Jones are all out of the picture.

Boulter was beaten by American Emina Bektas, while Burrage was beaten by Australia's Seone Mendez.

Jones retired after the first set against Arconada.

On Monday, Dart defeated Italy's Federica di Sarra to reach the second round, where she will play American Alycia Parks.
