Chicago city officials said in a press conference late on Monday night that the deal included provisions for additional testing and metrics that would determine school closings due to the virus.

The return to in-person classes would have led to more social, emotional and economic turmoil for families if it had not been for a public health reason.

The teacher's union said in a statement that it had voted to suspend the remote work action and that the new agreement would be voted on by its rank and file members.

At their own press conference, the union leaders acknowledged that the deal was not a home run but that teachers wanted to resume classes.

The teachers are expected to return to school on Tuesday, with students returning to classrooms the next day.

The vice president of the union said that the agreement is the only modicum of safety that is available for anyone that steps foot in the Chicago Public Schools.
